What an unbelievable stretch of weather – hard to believe September is winding down. Fishing has been pretty good for multi-species. We’ve seen a decent walleye bite taking place as fish are being located in the weeds. They’re virtually in summer-type patterns. We are beginning that transition to minnows so you need to take a variety of bait with you at this point in time. If cooler weather arrives as predicted next week – we should see a total minnow bite shortly. Water temps are still hovering in the high 60’s and we need these temps to fall into the 50’s so we can get on with our fall bite. My clients and I have been getting good catches of walleye, jumbo perch, crappie, northerns, smallmouth and largemouth bass – all these fish are being located in the same spots.
MUSKY fishing has been the slowest of all the fishing activities. With these warm water temps we are not seeing the sucker bite start up. Fish are still attacking lures, but are hard to come by. If you’re heading out this week, concentrate your efforts in heavy weed cover – both shallow and deep. Fish have been looking at a variety of lures – mainly smaller sizes. The 6-inch Suicks, crane baits and #5 Mepps’ have been the lures we’ve done best with. At the moment musky fishing is a labor of love. Once again, though, look for things to change rapidly if we get those cooler temps.
That’s it for now. See you on the water. Jeff Winters www.jeffsguideservice.com
