I am still amazed at how many people still don’t get it. FISH THE WIND BLOWN SHORES! “Dewey” took me fishing for my birthday last night and we saw the same thing over and over. Boats parked on shorelines out of the winds. And it wasn’t even that windy. The one thing we didn’t see was them pulling in a pile of fish. Yeah, there was one here and one there but no big runs. One the other hand when we headed to a wind blown rocky point with some nice green weeds on it, we caught fish. Bunch of crappie, small mouth bass and a couple of northern. We also hit another spot with lots of woods on the bottom and picked off a couple of real nice smallies. The walleyes hid well for us this night.
The bite was on minnows and leaches and cranks, nothing on crawlers. Today we finally have some clouds and a little more wind. This should help a lot because most species are found right now in very shallow water. Smallies, Largemouth, bluegills and crappies are all in some stage of the bedding thing. This means that those toothie critters are feasting on the ones that aren’t weary enough.
It should be a great weekend of fishing, maybe the best of the year… If you stay on the wind blown shorelines. One note of caution though. The water levels are VERY low. Flowages are very dangerous and a lot of lakes are not launchable. I had a fella tell me yesterday that Wild Rice was launchable but you couldn’t get out of the power wash hole. Not good.
Go get ‘em guys and gals. Take lots of different bait with you and have FUN! And don’t forget the kids!

Hi folks WOW – as bad as the weather has been at the beginning of the season, is as nice as it has been this past week. Temperatures have soared to the 80 degree mark, and not a breath of wind to be had. In 48 hours I went from wearing 7 layers of clothing to shorts and a T-shirt and getting burnt to that crackly crunch. As dramatic of an effect as the weather has had on me, it has also had this effect on the fishing. WALLEYES slowed down with this nice weather and with all the sunny, flat weather this is something I expected. There is still a pretty good bite going on though, and when we get that perfect walleye-chop day, things are going to go crazy. I’m still finding fish in that 7-8 ft. depth on virtually all waters from semi-clear to dark and it doesn’t matter if you’re in timber or weeds. Jig-and-minnow combinations are still working the best. I’m using a combination of both fatheads, dace and medium redtails. You need to take a variety as the best bite tends to be on one of these 3 minnows every day – you just don’t know which one is going to be the best until you start. Now I’ve been floating a leech on a slip bobber every day and we can’t buy a walleye on this setup. During this upcoming weekend, if you’re walleye fishing, start taking a couple of crawlers with you – as water temps have soared from 48 degrees a week ago to 72 degrees when I ended the day Wednesday. This is a huge change and fish should start looking at meat (crawlers) any time.
Warm weather and water temps have triggered an explosion of fishing activity in other species. BASS are beginning to pile up in search of their nests. We’ve been catching quite a few, both small and largemouth, while looking in shallow waters for a walleye bite. CRAPPIES have also moved in rapidly to shallow water to begin their spawn on many lakes in the area. We’ve been catching quite a few really nice crappies in the 10-12” mark using a hook-sinker-bobber setup tipped with a small minnow. NORTHERNS have also put on a rampage. We’re finding them EVERYWHERE – both in the shallows and a little deeper water. We are also finding some pretty nice-sized walleyes this year. The biggest so far was caught by my clients Wednesday – this was a very chunky 36-incher that was plaguing one of my favorite walleye spots.
It’s supposed to get even warmer throughout the weekend with temps approaching 90 predicted. If you’re going out, pack your sunscreen and your bait – you should be in for one heck of a good weekend of fishing. Enjoy yourself on the water as I’m taking a couple of days and going in search of a turkey ! When I come back, the walleyes will be in a trouble again.

After the Blackhawks took care of business in San Jose yesterday afternoon I decided to take a couple of hours and see if I could boat a Northern or two on a spinner bait. Well I did see tons of fish…because it was so calm I could see the bottom in five feet. Saw plenty of nice northern and bass cruising the bluegill and crappie beds looking for easy targets I guess. I did throw a 2″ Gulp grub for some crappies and was mildly effective at that. It was so calm I had to throw the bait out as far as I could to get a bite. And even then they were very light hits, mostly stealing the tail off the grub. And if the tail wasn’t on the grub, well, no interest.
The next few days should be great, highs in the 70s and light breezes. I’ll be out there and I’ll let you know what’s popping. Oh, btw, that lake was at 52-54 degrees two days ago. Now it’s at 62-64.

Hi folks Well we had a good week of fishing but the weather was awful – just when we thought it couldn’t get worse – it was sure a physical beating those first two weeks. The upside was a great walleye bite. We boated good numbers of decent-sized fish every day. Seven to eight foot weeds have still been key to finding fish. The same applies to wood. We’re finding fish in the wood in that 7-8’ mark, and the heavier the snags, the larger the concentration of fish you’ll find. Jig-and-minnow combinations are still working well, although fish are beginning to switch to larger bait. We’ve been using a lot more redtails and black chubs as of late. Leeches will still provide anglers with good action and we’ve caught a couple of fish while playing around with crawlers, although that bite is not quite ready yet.
CRAPPIES have pretty much remained in a holding pattern. I haven’t had too many reports of fish moving into their beds, and my personal experiences with catching crappies have been in those 7 to 8’ weeds that are located adjacent to their spawning areas. Some warm weather will probably trigger a pretty good crappie bite.
NORTHERN PIKE have also put on a pretty good bite. We are finding those in weeds ranging from 5 to 8 ft. Jig-and-minnow combinations are working pretty good as these fish are not quite ready to chase any fast moving lure.
We finally had a nice warm day on Saturday and without wind. The downside was the fish went into shock. It was the toughest day of fishing so far this year. We had a hard time mustering walleyes – we only caught a few, but we did catch a bunch of northern. So the day, while being extremely enjoyable, wasn’t overly productive. Now this weather pattern looks like it will continue for a few days more at least. Water temperatures are going to warm back up rapidly – they gained a lot of ground today. Look for fish to resume their very strong weed bite and if temps start busting the 60’s, be sure to try a crawler or two along the way – they will change to meat fast. Bug hatches are beginning already, but not mayflies.
I fished with John Gillespie of Wisc Waters and Woods and the show will be airing next weekend, May 22 & 23. Tune in to catch some Northwoods fishing activity.

Tommy’s has got a date with a Walleye in heaven now. Rock on’ Tadpole’. We’re gonna miss you. Tommy Zinda, long time fishing guide and a great promoter of the northwoods, passed last night, May 12th, after a battle with cancer. I will try to get details of his memorial on his web site at tommysfishingadventures.com soon.

I just couldn’t take sitting around and working on web sites anymore so when Dennis called and said “let’s go hit ‘em with cranks for an hour or so”, I responded “I’m IN!” Cold, windy and rain spitting on my glasses was only a deterrent until the first fish was caught, which wasn’t long. Dennis has his firetiger stick bait on and I tied on a chartreuse glow jig and tipped it with a bright yellow gulp grub tail. I saw Dennis’s face when I did this and I knew he thought I was nuts. Well, 13 Walleye (13-16″), 4 Rock Bass and one 30″ Musky later and the fish catching score was even. All of this in an hour and it would have been more but the Musky took about 15 minutes off our fishing time getting it in the boat and then released from the light tackle. Lot’s of fun. This is the short period of time during the year when you can get the ‘eyes up shallow on this lake, in good numbers. Dennis claims he got 25 of them two nights before.
I’m sure we won’t get out today as it is going to rain all day and not make it out of the 40’s. But this weekend looks fantastic. I can’t wait. I’ll keep you informed as we plan to get a bunch of pics and videos put up on the site.

I wish I had a great “You gotta be here” report to put up but I think we are paying for all our beautiful weather in April. Highs in the 40’s, north winds and rain have been the norm. All this can make for an fishing trip deemed uncomfortable at best. But I bring you good tidings. The weatherman says warmer weather is on the way this weekend and thru next week. So dust off the poles, buy some minnows and get ready to put that “Gone Fishing” sign back on the front door.
I’ll post another report later this week to tell you where they are.

Hi folks We’ve wound down the first full week of fishing for 2010. Overall, fishing was very good the entire week. We never encountered any problems with catching fish, but we did encounter problems with the weather. The entire week stayed fairly windy and temperatures decreased. Water temperatures remain exactly the same. Fish continue to be related to weeds and wood. Jig-and-minnow combinations have been working well. We also started to get some walleye activity on leeches. When using the leeches the best method was slip-bobbering. Northern pike started to put on a pretty good bite for us also this week, and we were finding some nice sized fish. We also were finding some big crappies staging in 6 to 8 ft weeds, just outside their spawning areas.
When looking for walleyes and northerns in the upcoming week, concentrate on water depths ranging from 7 to 10 feet. This seems to be the magic number when it comes to finding fish. From the extended forecast I’m seeing, temperatures are going to remain on the cool side during the day, and frosty at night. This should keep our conditions virtually the same throughout the week. I’ve always said, no matter what type of spring you get, lakes tend to even out at some point in time. At the rate our weather patterns are going, life on the lake should be pretty normal by the end of the month. If you’re coming up this weekend, packs LOTS of WARM clothes. Even when it’s nice out, it’s cold on the water and they’re talking 1 to 5 inches of snow possible on Friday night, which will make for some cold fishing over the weekend.
Good luck fishing. Jeff Winters www.jeffsguideservice.com
Spring is in the air and will soon be in Torpy Park in downtown Minocqua. June 5 & 6 brings the first craft show of the season. The Spring Arts & Crafts Show begins at 9:00 am each morning and shuts down at 3:00 pm. Come on up, over or down and see the talents that some people have. Make yourself a great day, Destination Diva
The fishing over the Opener was good, windy tough, but good. Walleyes were caught on shore and as deep as 30 feet on some lakes. Crappies, Northern, Perch, Bass and Bluegill also cooperated nicely and fine catches were taken across the region.
Now the bad news. The weather report looks like $&%*^#@. Nice day today, up to 68, but then the bottom starts to fall out with a HIGH on Saturday of only 42! Yikes. (don’t think snow) These temps will slow the fishing, no doubt. But the good news is that while it might be slow now, it will come back with the temps next week.
Does this mean you can’t catch fish now? No, no, no. What it means is the fish will not be as active so you must do two things. SLOW down your presentation and REDUCE the size of your jig holding the minnow.
If anything changes, which it some times does, I will let you know.
Hey, take a kid fishing with you and make sure you have FUN!
